ORCHESTRA OF THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITY

The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana (OCV) returns to Palau Altea on September 12 to present an exceptional concert.  

The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana is honoured to welcome German conductor Anja Bihlmaier, a prominent figure at the BBC Proms and Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Acclaimed for her precision and musical insight, she opens the concert with Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, a work that achieved worldwide fame through Maurice Ravel's brilliant orchestration, celebrated for its vibrant colours and rich orchestral textures.

The second half features Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, a powerful meditation on humanity's struggle with fate, one of the defining themes of the Romantic era, which the composer ultimately chose to resolve with a message of hope and optimism. The opening movement introduces the famous fate motif that serves as the work's unifying thread, reappearing throughout a sublime Andante and, later, in an elegant Waltz that briefly eases the tension before leading to the Finale. Here, the symphony's initially sombre character is transformed into an epic musical drama that culminates in a triumphant and hopeful march.
