It is an age-old story that speaks to us about the eternal struggle between reason and violence, of a sick community with savage behaviors. A story that talks about the identity so necessary for us, which comes from being rooted in the land where we are born. That land which becomes a desert without its main sustenance: water.
La barraca tells of the rejection faced by Batiste Borrull’s family when they settle in a barraca and on some lands of the Valencian orchard from which another family had been evicted for nonpayment after having lived and worked there for several generations. The local farmers, all tenants themselves, aim to keep these lands barren as a symbol of power against their landlords. The conflict will grow in intensity until it turns into tragedy.
The story told in La barraca moves us because of the relevance of its characters and conflicts. La barraca addresses the unjustified rise of rents, evictions, child harassment, and the bitter confrontation between natives and immigrants.
